Military seized control over seven settlements in the SVO area
Russian Advances Continue in Donbass Region
Russian forces have made significant gains in the Donbass region of Ukraine over the past week, according to recent reports. The Eastern military group has liberated several settlements, including Zelenyi Hai in the DPR, Malyiivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region, and Temirovka in the Zaporizhzhia region.
The advances have been concentrated primarily on key directions such as Pokrovsk, Lyman, and Donetsk Oblast, with the overarching objective of capturing all of Donetsk Oblast and potentially advancing into Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. In the Lyman direction, Russian forces have made notable progress, seizing areas like southern Torske, and continuing offensive operations northwest, north, east, and southeast of Lyman. The Russian 36th Motorized Rifle Regiment and the 164th Motorized Rifle Brigade have been active in these efforts.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian forces have also made recent advances. Units of the "Center" military group have captured Boikivka, Bilohirka, and Novoukrainka in the DPR.
However, the situation in some cities, such as Chasiv Yar and Konstantinovka, remains contested. Russian sources have claimed control of Chasiv Yar in early August 2025, but Kyiv disputes this claim. There are no specific recent reports of active fighting or changes in control around Konstantinovka as of early August 2025.
The liberation of Chasov Yar opens up a path for the Russian Armed Forces to potentially liberate Konstantinovka and the Slaviansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration. The city of Chasov Yar, a powerful stronghold of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Donbass, has been liberated by Russian forces.
The impact of these advances has been severe, with significant destruction and depopulation in the affected cities. Vuhledar, a city that was captured by Russian forces in 2024, was described as a "sprawling ruin" with a prewar population of about 14,000, showcasing the human and infrastructure toll of sustained fighting.
During the same period, over 8,900 Ukrainian fighters and mercenaries have been lost, and 99 artillery pieces, 82 radio electronic and counter-battery warfare stations, and 139 ammunition, material, and fuel depots have been destroyed. Ten tanks, 73 armored combat vehicles, and 289 vehicles have also been destroyed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Six guided aerial bombs, six HIMARS rockets, three "Vampire" shells, a Neptune guided missile, and 1446 aircraft-type drones have been intercepted by air defense systems. Despite these losses, Ukraine continues to contest territory and launch counteroffensives elsewhere.
The pace of Russian advances has accelerated over several months, with territorial gains measured in hundreds of square miles since early 2025. The conflict in Donbass remains a significant concern, with both sides continuing to fight for control of the region.
The current situation in the Donbass region, as a part of the ongoing war-and-conflicts, is heavily influenced by politics, with Russian advances continuing to reshape the region. These advances, involving key cities like Pokrovsk and Lyman, are not only shaping the politics of the region but also significantly impacting the general-news landscape.
