Military preparations for the seizure of Gaza are underway, as announced by the army's official spokesperson.
The Israeli military has announced the start of the "next phase" in its ongoing conflict with Hamas, aiming to end the population's dependence on the terrorist organization. This decision comes after a series of preparatory measures, including the mobilization of reservists and the issuance of around 60,000 reserve orders for early September.
The exact timing of the ground assault on the Gaza Strip remains unclear, but the military has outlined a phased schedule with reservists fully operational by early September 2025. The military warns that the advance will take time and urges caution regarding the safety of hostages and soldiers.
The conflict, triggered by an attack by Hamas and other Islamic groups on Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in around 1,200 deaths and more than 250 hostages taken into the Gaza Strip. Since the beginning of the war almost two years ago, nearly all residents of the coastal strip have become internal refugees.
The Israeli military's plan involves the conquest of the last terrorist strongholds and the defeat of Hamas, with efforts to shorten the schedule. The Israeli government has not provided details about the plan for the takeover of Gaza, but media reports suggest that the residents of Gaza are to be evacuated to refugee camps in the center of the sealed-off Gaza Strip by early October.
The civilian population in Gaza City, estimated to be around one million people, are to move to tent camps further south in the coastal strip according to the plan of the Israeli military. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the acceleration of the takeover of the city of Gaza.
Defrin, the military spokesperson, stated that Hamas is no longer the same as before the Israeli military operation, having developed into a battered and weakened guerrilla organization. Defrin also mentioned that the military would warn the civilian population and facilitate their evacuation to keep the danger for the people as low as possible.
The Israeli security cabinet agreed to a plan for the takeover of Gaza at the beginning of August. Israeli troops are currently occupying the outskirts of Gaza City. More than 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war, according to the Palestinian health authority.
As the conflict continues, the Israeli military emphasizes the importance of civilians keeping away from active combat zones for their safety. The military's aim is to further exacerbate the damage to Hamas in Gaza, which is described as a stronghold of state and military terror of the terrorist organization.
