Military personnel in Germany under scrutiny for alleged acts of terrorism
In a significant development, investigators and special police forces have carried out searches across three German states - Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, and North Rhine-Westphalia. The raids, connected to the investigation of the suspected right-wing extremist group "Nordbund", have resulted in the seizure of several live firearms, including short and long firearms.
Eight suspects, aged between 32 and 57, are under investigation for forming an armed group based on suspected far-right extremist leanings. Four of these suspects are alleged to possess illegal war weapons and other fully automatic firearms, although no weapons subject to the War Weapons Control Act were seized during the raid.
Two active and two former soldiers from the German Armed Forces, as well as a federal police officer, were arrested during the raids. A pistol with ammunition was seized from one of the suspects by the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office at the end of April.
The investigations against the suspected right-wing extremist group "Nordbund" are being led by the Central Office for Combating Terrorism of the General Public Prosecutor's Office in Celle, together with the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office. The focus of the investigations is on the evaluation of electronic data carriers and detailed weapons law assessments.
Despite the progress made, several questions remain unanswered due to ongoing investigations. The connection among the suspects is one such question that remains a mystery. The investigations are complex, involving the Generalstaatsanwaltschaft (Public Prosecutor's Office) in Celle and police special forces, including terrorism investigators.
As the investigations continue, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The fight against extremism and terrorism is a collective responsibility, and every piece of information can contribute to a safer society.
