The Nation's Capital has seen an increased presence of the National Guard, a part of the U.S. Army, following a series of recent deployments.

In a move initiated by the Trump administration, West Virginia National Guard troops have been sent to Washington D.C. Their mission is to support a city-wide initiative aimed at restoring cleanliness and safety. The troops are expected to provide mission-essential equipment, specialized training, and approximately 300-400 skilled personnel to aid in public safety, regional cooperation, and environmental improvement.

This deployment is part of a federally funded effort, reflecting a commitment to public safety in the nation's capital.

The President's authority to deploy the National Guard extends to special situations such as natural disasters, riots, and internal emergencies. In this unique case, as Washington D.C. is not a state itself, the National Guard falls directly under the President's command.

The President's decree also placed the police in Washington D.C. under the authority of Attorney General Pam Bondi initially. However, command of the police was later transferred to the head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Terry Cole.

The deployment and subsequent command changes are supported by the "Home Rule Act," a law that allows the U.S. President to place Washington police under federal command in case of an emergency. The President, in this instance, can only instruct Washington's mayor, Muriel Bowser, on how to deploy law enforcement agencies according to the Act.

The focus of Trump and law enforcement agencies extends beyond just public safety. They are also concentrating on addressing issues related to homeless individuals on the streets and plazas of the city. Additionally, there is a particular focus on migrants who may be in the country without proper documentation.

This move by the Trump administration is aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of Washington D.C.'s residents and visitors while addressing the city's unique challenges.
