Military personnel from the Marines have arrived in Los Angeles; the governor of California has issued a warning, stating "democracy is under threat."

America's second largest city, Los Angeles, is gripped by turbulence as U.S. Marines arrive at its gates following the orders of President Donald Trump. The city's democratic leadership is sounding the alarm, claiming "democracy itself is under attack." Trump's deployment of National Guard and Marines to curb protests, sparked by his immigration raids, has triggered demonstrations for the fifth consecutive day.
As Trump and California's governor, Gavin Newsom, exchange heavy words, Los Angeles' mayor declares the protests are confined to around five downtown streets. However, due to the violence and looting, a curfew has been imposed on certain areas of the downtown district. On Tuesday alone, authorities made 197 new arrests, doubling the total number since the protests began.
The city's chaos has escalated into a contentious standoff between Trump and Newsom, with the president casting the California governor as an adversary who should be arrested. Newson, seen as a potential contender for the 2028 presidency, has harshly criticized Trump's actions, calling them an illegal waste of resources. Newsom and the state have taken legal action against Trump and the Defense Department, seeking to prevent the deployment of federal troops.
Trump, who secured a second term largely on his promise to deport undocumented immigrants, has defended his decision by stating that troops are protecting the nation from an "assault on peace, public order, and national sovereignty." He has labeled the demonstrations as riots backed by foreign flags, and marked the city for "liberation."
Protesters, including those waving the flags of Mexico and other countries, have been taking to the streets, voicing their support for the migrants targeted in the ongoing immigration raids. According to Homeland Security, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement division has been arresting more than 2,000 immigration offenders per day, far above the 311 daily average in fiscal year 2024 under former President Joe Biden.
With Los Angeles at the boiling point, the city's mayor, Karen Bass, announced a curfew for a one-square-mile area of downtown. As the curfew took effect, hundreds of protesters faced the police with their hands raised, chanting for peaceful protest. Yet, state and local officials have labeled Trump's response as an extreme overreaction to mostly peaceful demonstrations.
The mayor and city council members have emphasized the distinction between the majority of demonstrators protesting peacefully and a smaller number of agitators responsible for the violence and destruction. A curfew had been considered for several days, but Bass imposed one after 23 businesses were looted on Monday night.
Around 700 Marines are stationed in a staging area about 30 miles from Los Angeles, waiting for deployment. In addition to the Marines, there are approximately 2,100 National Guard troops currently stationed in the region. Although Marines and National Guard troops lack the authority to make arrests, California's Attorney General, Rob Bonta, has expressed concerns about their protection of federal personnel, stating that it may violate an 1878 law that generally bars the U.S. military, including the National Guard, from civilian law enforcement.
As this unfolds, the courtrooms prepare for a legal battle to determine the future of these deployments and the strategy Trump intends to employ to enforce his immigration policies.
