Military operation initiated in Gaza City, Israel

In the heart of Gaza City, a relentless barrage of Israeli military actions has left at least 36 people dead and much of the city in ruins. The assault, which includes strikes on terrorist infrastructure and a ground offensive, was announced following US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's support for Israel's goal of eradicating Hamas.

Witnesses have reported unabated bombing in the city, with Israeli forces unleashing a massive bombardment. The military's advance has seen Israeli troops moving deeper into Gaza City's largest urban hub. Israel's Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, described the city as "on fire."

The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry has found the situation in Gaza to be alarming, with the report accusing Israel of committing "genocide" in the Palestinian territory. The report further charges Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli President Isaac Herzog, and former Israeli minister of defense Yoav Gallant with incitement. The commission's chief, Navi Pillay, stated that the responsibility lies with the State of Israel.

The UN rights chief has demanded an end to the "carnage," and the European Union has expressed concern that the ground assault would worsen an already "catastrophic" humanitarian situation. About 40% of Gaza City residents have already fled and moved to the territory's south.

The assault has drawn widespread condemnation, with many calling for an immediate end to the violence. A UN probe accused Israel of committing genocide and found that explicit statements by Israeli civilian and military authorities and the pattern of Israeli forces' conduct indicated genocidal acts with intent to destroy Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The situation in Gaza City has been deteriorating for nearly two years, with countless Israeli strikes leaving much of the city in ruins. A residential block in the north of the city was hit by overnight bombing, leaving huge piles of rubble.

Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 Hamas militants are believed to be operating in the area. Despite the ongoing violence, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed support specifically for Israel's military offensive in Gaza City. He reaffirmed Washington's backing of Israel during his visit to Israel and meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but did not publicly endorse military actions by other countries in this context.

As the situation in Gaza City continues to unfold, the international community calls for a swift resolution to the conflict and an end to the loss of innocent lives.
