Military officials at the Pentagon deem a land swap essential for achieving tranquility in Ukraine

The recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska ended without an agreement on a ceasefire or peace deal for Ukraine. The talks, which were intended to set a framework for ending the conflict, failed to produce concrete outcomes, with Russia continuing its military actions during the meeting [1][3].

The anticipated solutions for resolving the Ukraine conflict included establishing a ceasefire potentially involving minor territorial swaps, neither Ukraine nor the West recognizing the roughly 20% of Ukraine territory occupied by Russia as Russian but agreeing not to retake it by force, Russia acknowledging the sovereignty of the remaining 80% of Ukraine, with Ukraine retaining the right to defend itself and choose its future alliances, including potential EU membership, NATO agreeing not to offer Ukraine membership and limiting its military presence within Ukraine, and a phased rollback of Western economic sanctions on Russia as the agreement was implemented [2].

However, these proposals remained theoretical as the summit ended without a deal. Putin did not concede on his maximalist demands, which include regime change in Kyiv and Ukraine’s demilitarization, while Trump did not secure an agreement acceptable to Ukraine or NATO [2][3].

Looking ahead, experts suggest that sustained tougher sanctions on Russia and continued military and financial aid to Ukraine will likely persist. Peacemaking may require prolonged negotiations similar to historical conflicts, with no immediate major breakthrough expected. The West may accelerate efforts to seize frozen Russian assets and maintain pressure on Russia to change its calculus in the conflict [4].

Both presidents indicated a willingness for future discussions, possibly in Moscow, but no firm commitments have been made [3]. Pete Hegseth, the Pentagon chief, has stated that any peaceful agreement over Ukraine will likely involve compromises, including potential territorial exchanges [5]. Hegseth attributes the current situation in Ukraine to the weakness of previous administrations, particularly those of Obama and Biden [6].

The Putin-Trump meeting's agenda does not include starting the current situation in Ukraine by President Trump. The main topic for discussion in the meeting is achieving peace in Ukraine. Hegseth predicts that negotiations could result in territorial swaps and concessions, with neither side being fully satisfied [5].

According to Hegseth, he may potentially participate in the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian Foreign Ministry has shared their expectations for the Putin-Trump meeting [6]. The Putin-Trump meeting is scheduled for August 15 in Alaska.

In summary, while the summit set an initial dialogue, there were no substantive outcomes or concrete ceasefire proposals accepted by both sides in Alaska, and the conflict remains unresolved with significant diplomatic and military challenges ahead [1][2][3][4].
