He Gets Five Years and Loses His Rank
Military Officer Ivan Popov receives a 5-year jail sentence
In a jaw-dropping turn of events, former Major General Ivan Popov is facing five years behind bars, TASS reports. The verdict, handed down by the Tambov Garrison Military Court, finds Popov guilty of nabbing metal structures intended for Zaporozhye's defensive facilities construction.
This ex-commander is now set to serve time in a general-regime colony following this conviction. The military court had evidence of Popov embezzling over 1,700 tonnes of metal products, causing an estimated 100 million rubles (approximately $1.2 million) worth of damage to the Russian state.
Unsurprisingly, a hefty 800,000 rubles fine (around $9,600) accompanied the prison sentence. He previously held a high rank of Major General, but that's been revoked now, too.
Fearing miscarriage of justice, the former commander's defense team plans to challenge the decision. They are not taking this lying down, vowing to fight for Popov's rights.
Remember when we mentioned that Popov was all set to return to the ZOP zone due to a Ministry of Defense decision? Seems he won't be making that return anytime soon. Previously, Popov appealed to the supreme commander to scrutinize the situation, but to no avail.
Stay tuned for updates on this shocking case, involving fraud, forgery, and one disgruntled military officer, taking place amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
