Military of Israel initiates land assault in Gaza City, causing thousands of Palestinians to evacuate
In a dramatic turn of events, Israel launched an offensive in Gaza City on Tuesday, escalating the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The operation has led to a massive exodus of Palestinians from the city, with estimates suggesting that over 300,000 residents have fled their homes.
Thousands of Palestinians fled Gaza City due to the offensive, seeking safety in neighbouring areas. The Shifa hospital in Gaza received the bodies of 49 people, including 22 children, while Al-Ahli Hospital received 17 bodies, and Al-Quds hospital received three bodies.
The Israeli military's operation aims to crush Hamas' ability to fight, a move that follows accusations of Hamas building military infrastructure inside civilian areas in the past. Israel has pledged to take control of the entire city of Gaza, and by the end of the current operation, Israeli troops hope to control all of the Gaza Strip except for a large swath along the coast.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the abduction of 251. Forty-eight hostages, fewer than half believed to be alive, remain in Gaza. Families of the hostages still being held in Gaza gathered outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence, imploring him to stop the offensive.
Hamas has stated that it will only free the remaining captives in return for Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire, and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Egypt's president, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, described Israel as "an enemy" in a fiery speech at the Qatar summit, marking the first time an Egyptian leader has used the term since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1979.
Experts warn of a looming humanitarian crisis in Gaza City, with reports suggesting that the city is experiencing famine. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the deadly strikes.
Before the offensive, an estimated 1 million Palestinians were living in the Gaza City region. It remains to be seen how this ongoing conflict will unfold and what the future holds for the people of Gaza City.
