Celebrating the Great Patriotic War: The Russian List of Royality-Free War-Era Tunes for Victory Day

In a move to honor the triumph of the Great Patriotic War, the Russian government has sanctioned an array of war-time tunes for public use during celebratory events. The Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin, has formally signed the decree.

The approved list, available on the government's site, consists of 52 songs and the march "Slavianskaia Polka". Among them are the patriotic classics like "Den' Pobedy", "V lesu prifrontovom", "Katyusha", "Zhavoronki", "Sinii platochek", "Na bezimennoy vysote", and "Pesenka voennykh korrespondentov"—songs that will fill the air at concerts, rallies, parades, memorial ceremonies, TV, and radio programs on Victory Day, Defender of the Fatherland Day, Days of Military Glory, or other significant dates related to the Great Patriotic War, without the burden of royalties.

This decision follows the implementation of new norms set in the Russian President Vladimir Putin's law signed in December 2024, titled "On the perpetuation of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War." The law mandates the cabinet to compile a publicly accessible list of music works legally published before December 26, 1991, that glorify the Soviet people's feats during the war. The goal is to create a royality-free collection for public performances on holidays and memorial days.
