Israel Announces Major Military Operation Against Hamas in Gaza
Israel has unveiled a new war plan aimed at taking control of Gaza City and dismantling the Islamic militant group Hamas. The operational plan, approved by Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and other top commanders, includes the mobilization of 60,000 reservists, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.
The plan, revealed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is a response to the Hamas assault in October 2023 that claimed the lives of 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages. The ultimate objective is to end Hamas's control over Gaza and its capacity to launch attacks on Israel.
However, the new war plan poses significant risks, according to Zamir. He has expressed concerns that the plan could endanger soldiers and hostages believed to be in the city of Gaza.
The capture of the city of Gaza and the dismantling of Hamas in central refugee camps are key objectives of the new war plan. The operational plan for the Gaza Strip is the main framework for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has condemned the Israeli plan, warning it would cause massive displacement, destruction, and suffering for civilians. The UN insists the plan violates international law and calls for an immediate halt to the takeover, unrestricted humanitarian aid access, and the unconditional release of all hostages and detainees on both sides.
Previous ceasefire efforts in early 2025, which involved prisoner exchanges and proposed phased de-escalation, collapsed after Israel resumed hostilities in March 2025, citing Hamas’s refusal to release hostages and reject ceasefire extensions.
There are reported tensions between Zamir and Defense Minister Israel Katz, although the specifics of their disagreements are not clear from the available data.
