Israel Announces Major Escalation in Gaza War, Mobilizing 60,000 Reservists

The Israeli military has announced a significant escalation in its operational plans for the Gaza War, with the aim to capture Gaza City and dismantle the Islamic Hamas presence, particularly in central refugee camps. This move comes after the approval of the operational plan by Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir during a meeting attended by the General Staff, representatives of the Shin Bet internal security service, and other commanders.

The IDF has called up 60,000 reservists as part of this intensified campaign. This represents a significant expansion of the conflict and signals a strong intent by the Israeli government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take control of Gaza City.

The operation is presented as a continuation of efforts to dismantle Islamic Hamas, which has governed Gaza since 2007 and is viewed by Israel as a terrorist organization responsible for attacks, including the October 7, 2023 massacre. The scale of the mobilization underscores the high stakes and aims to decisively control the area despite longstanding humanitarian and political complexities.

The new Israeli war plan also includes the dismantling of the Islamic Hamas in central refugee camps in the Gaza Strip and the capture of the city of Gaza. Preparations are underway for the mobilization of additional reservists in relation to the Gaza War.

Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has approved operational plans for the expansion of the Gaza War and has warned of significant risks associated with the new war plan. Zamir has reportedly expressed concerns that the new plan endangers soldiers and hostages believed to be in the city of Gaza.

There are also reports of significant tensions between Zamir and Defense Minister Israel Katz in relation to the Gaza War. The operational plan for the Gaza War, being prepared by the Israeli military, is being referred to as the main framework for the IDF's operational plan in the Gaza Strip.

The latest update indicates that this plan marks one of the most significant escalations in the Gaza conflict since Israel’s 2005 disengagement under then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who had acknowledged the difficulties of maintaining control over Gaza given its densely populated refugee camps and entrenched poverty. The current expansion is likely to have serious humanitarian and geopolitical consequences as well.
