Military forces of the United States National Guard have deployed in Washington D.C.
National Guard Deployed to Bolster Law Enforcement in Washington, D.C.
President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of over 2,000 National Guard personnel from several states to Washington, D.C., as part of his ongoing efforts to combat crime in the capital.
The National Guard troops, hailing from West Virginia, South Carolina, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, are set to arrive in the city over the next few weeks. They will be primarily tasked with supporting the Metropolitan Police Department and federal law enforcement partners in securing the city, protecting federal facilities, and reducing crime.
The mission includes securing monuments, protecting federal properties, supporting community safety, and driving down crime. The troops will be activated under Title 32, meaning they are under state authority but federally funded, with the D.C. Guard operating under federal control.
The deployment is a response to President Trump’s assertions of rising crime in the capital, despite Department of Justice data showing crime had actually decreased significantly. According to Trump, juveniles in Washington are robbing, maiming, and shooting innocent citizens without facing any consequences for their actions.
The National Guard units, however, have been noted in some reports as having limited active roles in crime-fighting beyond patrol and presence reinforcement. They will remain in Washington, D.C. as long as the president decides.
In a clarification on the deployment, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth stated that the National Guard's role is to assist law enforcement and provide a visible presence to deter criminal activity. The National Guard of the District of Columbia has also been deployed to support law enforcement in the nation's capital.
Trump's announcement comes as part of a series of measures aimed at fighting crime in Washington. He has also called for changes to Washington's laws to allow authorities to sentence juveniles to long prison terms.
