Denmark's UN ambassador, Christina Markus Lassen, has announced that the catastrophic situation in Gaza has compelled Denmark to take action. The crisis, which began over two years ago, has claimed the lives of over 65,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.

The latest developments in the conflict were marked by the vetoing of a draft United Nations Security Council resolution by the United States. The resolution demanded an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the lifting of all restrictions on aid deliveries to the Palestinian enclave.

The resolution, drafted by the elected 10 members of the 15-member UN Security Council, also called for the immediate, dignified, and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups. These hostages, according to the armed wing of Hamas, are distributed throughout the neighborhoods of Gaza City.

The conflict was triggered on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas initiated the war, resulting in the death of 1,200 people and the taking of 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures.

Israeli forces have been making significant advances in Gaza City, controlling its eastern suburbs and bombarding the Sheikh Radwan and Tel Al-Hawa areas. The IDF claimed an air strike had killed Mahmoud Yusuf Abu Alkhir, deputy head of military intelligence in Hamas' Bureij Battalion.

The situation in Gaza City is dire. Around 320,000 people have fled the city by September 15, 2025, while approximately twice that number—about 640,000 residents—are still believed to remain in the city. Previously, estimates suggested up to one million people lived in Gaza City before the recent escalations.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is not limited to displacement. Famine has been confirmed in the region, with most structures in the Gaza Strip having been demolished, leaving the population gripped by hunger and famine.

Despite numerous attempts to mediate an end to the conflict, these efforts have thus far proven unsuccessful. Toufic Abu Mouawad, a Palestinian, said he left a camp for the displaced with nowhere to go due to the advance. Dozens of protesters gathered on the Israeli side of the border, calling for an end to the war with slogans like "Stop the genocide in Gaza" and "Free Gaza, isolate Israel".

Hamas, however, has stated that it will not disarm until a Palestinian state is established. This position, along with the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis, paints a grim picture for the future of Gaza and its people.
