In the heart of the Middle East, the city of Gaza is experiencing a devastating humanitarian crisis. Overnight strikes have claimed at least 16 lives, including women and children, bringing the total death toll since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, to a staggering 65,000 Palestinians.

The United Nations Commission of Inquiry has concluded that the situation in Gaza constitutes genocide. However, Israel denies this allegation.

Israeli military operations in Gaza City have intensified, with the city being struck over 150 times in the last few days. The Israeli military has announced a new route, Salah al-Din street along Gaza's coastline, for evacuation starting September 17. Israel has also pledged to open another corridor along a road hugging Gaza's coastline for two hours to allow more people to evacuate.

Despite these measures, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians remain trapped in Gaza City. Many in the north of the city are currently cut off from the outside world due to collapsed internet and telephone services caused by Israeli strikes.

Tragically, the majority of those killed in overnight Israeli strikes were in Gaza City. Reports of civilian casualties continue to pour in, such as the incident in the urban Nuseirat refugee camp, where a strike hit a house, killing a pregnant woman and her family. Another heart-wrenching incident occurred in the Muwasi area west of Khan Younis, where a strike hit a tent, killing two parents and their child.

The international community has expressed concern and called for action. A coalition of leading aid groups has urged stronger measures to stop Israel's offensive on Gaza City. Foreign ministers from Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand have issued a joint statement warning that Israeli plans to control Gaza would worsen the humanitarian situation, endanger hostages, cause mass displacement, and might violate international humanitarian law. Arab and Islamic states gathered in a special summit in Qatar strongly condemned Israel's attacks, with leaders denouncing Israel's actions as killings of negotiating partners and attacks on a mediating country.

The coalition's statement comes a day after a commission of U.N. experts found Israel was committing genocide in the Palestinian enclave. As the death toll continues to rise, it is crucial for the international community to intervene in the ongoing crisis in Gaza City.
