Military forces of Israel moving into Gaza City, prompting Palestinians to evacuate
Israel has opened another corridor south of Gaza City, aiming to facilitate the evacuation of civilians amidst the ongoing conflict. However, the situation remains dire, with the Israeli military's offensive leading to over 150 strikes on Gaza City in the past few days.
The strikes have resulted in significant casualties, with more than 65,000 Palestinian deaths reported by local health officials since the war began in 2023. Overnight strikes alone killed at least 16 people, including women and children, and more than half of these deaths occurred in Gaza City.
The Israeli military has been accused of targeting civilian areas, including the Rantisi Hospital for children in Gaza City, which was hit by Israeli strikes on Tuesday night. The Israeli government has, however, denied these allegations and has pledged to take full control of Gaza City.
The Israeli military's actions have prompted a coalition of aid groups to urge the international community to take stronger measures to stop the offensive. The statement, signed by leaders of more than 20 aid organizations operating in Gaza, including the Norwegian Refugee Council, Anera, and Save the Children, expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
The conflict began due to a Hamas-led militant attack into southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 civilian deaths and 250 abductions. The recent conflict has also led to the toppling of high-rise towers in densely populated areas of Gaza City, causing widespread destruction and displacement.
The Israeli military's offensive has also cut off phone and internet services in Gaza City, making it difficult for aid groups to coordinate relief efforts. As a result, the exact number of casualties and displaced persons is difficult to determine.
Forty-eight hostages remain in Gaza, with fewer than half believed to be alive. The attack on the Rantisi Hospital for children has further shattered the illusion of safety in Gaza, according to Fikr Shalltoot, Gaza director for the aid group Medical Aid for Palestinians.
The Israeli government has criticized the UN Human Rights Council's independent investigation commission, accusing it of bias and antisemitic tendencies, after the commission found Israel was committing genocide in the Palestinian enclave. Israeli Ambassador Daniel Meron called the report scandalous and categorically rejected the accusations.
The Israeli military is investigating the strikes on the Rantisi Hospital for children in Gaza City, but the ongoing conflict shows no signs of abating, with Israeli forces pushing deeper into Gaza City on Wednesday. The international community continues to watch with concern as the situation in Gaza City unfolds.
