Military forces of Israel initiate extensive land-based operation within the boundaries of Gaza Strip
In a significant development, the Israeli army has initiated a large-scale ground offensive in Gaza City, named "Operation Gideon's Chariot 2." Defence Minister Israel Katz made this announcement from the headquarters of the 162nd Division, which is participating in the operation.
Katz referred to Gaza City as "Hamas's main governing symbol," emphasising that the force of the attack directly targets Hamas. One of the operation's objectives, as stated by Katz, is to defeat Hamas and disarm them. Another objective is to secure the release of hostages.
Troops from the 98th Division, supported by air and naval units, have entered Gaza City. The 162nd Division, which was relocated to northern Gaza during operations, is also operating in the city. However, the commander of the 162nd Division is not explicitly named in the search results, but Barak Hiram, the commander of the Gaza Division since September 2024, may have coordinated with or overseen the 162nd Division's activities.
The offensive has resulted in the striking of dozens of sites, including military buildings, observation posts, and booby-trapped structures. Gaza residents have reported heavy bombardment as the ground offensive expands.
Katz described taking control of Gaza City as a key step in the operation. He also mentioned that the operation's objective is to take control of Gaza City and target Hamas strongholds. The army spokesperson, Dafrín, stated that the operation is expected to continue for several months.
Katz's remarks are believed to have increased leverage for the release of hostages, according to his own words. The operation, named "Operation Gideon's Chariot 2," is continuing, as per the army spokesperson's previous statement. More than 350,000 civilians have reportedly evacuated the city as part of ongoing safety measures.
The offensive in Gaza City marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, and developments are being closely monitored by the international community.
