In the heart of the Middle East, the ongoing conflict in Gaza continues to take a heavy toll on its civilian population. According to figures from the territory's health ministry, which the United Nations considers reliable, Israel's retaliatory campaign has claimed at least 65,174 lives, mostly civilians, nearly two years into the war.

The United Nations estimated that about one million people were living in Gaza and its surroundings at the end of August. The recent Israeli military ground assault on Gaza, launched on Tuesday, has forced many to flee. Nivin Ahmed, a Palestinian, is among them. She and her seven family members walked more than 15 kilometers (nine miles) from Gaza to the central city of Deir el-Balah on foot.

The Israeli military's actions are aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure and locating weapons in the area. However, the assault has also resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis. The Israeli military has declared a "humanitarian area" in Al-Mawasi on the coast, where aid, medical care, and humanitarian infrastructure will be provided. Despite this, the United Nations has declared a famine in Gaza.

Several Western governments, including Britain and France, plan to recognize a Palestinian state at a UN summit next week. This recognition comes amidst a UN probe that accused Israel of committing "genocide" in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military, however, has rejected these findings, calling the probe distorted and false.

The conflict has also led to a massive displacement of people. The military estimates that about 480,000 people have fled Gaza since late August. Israeli fire killed at least 33 people across the territory on Friday, 18 of them in Gaza. Mahmud Bassal, the spokesman for Gaza's civil defence agency, reported "artillery shelling and intermittent gunfire" in the southwestern Tel al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza, as well as shelling and drone fire in northwestern areas and strikes in several neighborhoods.

Despite the military's urging for residents to head south, many Palestinians find the journey too expensive and do not know where to go. The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with no end to the conflict in sight. The international community is urged to intervene and bring an end to the violence and alleviate the suffering of the civilian population.
