In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, the past few days have seen a significant escalation, particularly in Gaza. Israeli troops and tanks have pushed deeper into the city on Wednesday, resulting in numerous strikes that have caused widespread destruction.

The strikes have been particularly devastating in densely populated areas, with more than half of the Palestinians killed in these overnight attacks occurring in Gaza. Tragically, these casualties include women, children, and families. For instance, a child and his mother died in their apartment in the Shati refugee camp, while another family of three, including a pregnant woman, was killed in the urban Nuseirat refugee camp.

The damage caused by these strikes is extensive, with high-rise towers toppled and essential infrastructure destroyed. The severed phone and internet services in Gaza are making it harder for Palestinians to summon ambulances during the military's offensive, further complicating the already dire situation.

The aid community is expressing growing concern over the situation. A coalition of more than 20 international humanitarian groups, including Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), Oxfam, Care, and Save the Children, has urged the international community to take stronger measures to stop Israel's offensive on Gaza. They argue that what is happening in Gaza amounts to genocide.

However, Israel denies these allegations, issuing statements claiming it takes steps to mitigate harm to civilians. The Israeli military has struck Gaza more than 150 times in the last few days, with multiple strikes hitting hospitals and other essential facilities.

The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel in 2023, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of about 250 others. Since then, over 165,697 Palestinians have been wounded, and the Palestinian death toll in the Israel-Hamas war has surpassed 65,000, according to the Health Ministry.

Fikr Shalltoot, Gaza director for the aid group Medical Aid for Palestinians, stated that the attacks have shattered the illusion that hospitals or any place in Gaza is safe from Israel's actions. The coalition's message was signed by leaders of these aid organizations operating in Gaza, including the Norwegian Refugee Council, Anera, and Save the Children.

In a bid to alleviate some of the suffering, Israel has opened another corridor south of Gaza for two days beginning Wednesday to allow more people to evacuate. However, with 48 hostages still trapped in Gaza, and fewer than half believed to be alive, the situation remains critical.

As the conflict continues, the international community is urged to take immediate action to prevent further loss of life and ensure the protection of civilians in Gaza.
