Russian Navy Conducts Live-Fire Drills at Novorossiysk Sea Port
The Russian Navy is set to conduct live-fire drills at the Novorossiysk Sea Port in Krasnodar today, from 11:00 to 13:00. These drills are part of larger naval training operations, known as the July Storm exercises, and are primarily designed to improve the Russian Navy’s readiness to repel maritime attacks, including those involving unmanned systems.
The drills will involve the participation of units of the Russian Navy, including more than 150 vessels, around 15,000 military personnel, over 120 aircraft, and coastal missile defense systems. Specifically, the drills at Novorossiysk will include the deployment of new types of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and UAVs. These unmanned systems will be used both defensively to repel attacks, particularly those by Ukrainian sea and air drones, and offensively, demonstrating an evolving Russian naval strategy incorporating unmanned systems.
The purpose of these drills is to enhance the combat readiness and war-fighting capacity of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, with a special focus on countering and employing unmanned maritime and aerial systems. The exercises will simulate unconventional maritime combat, including repelling drone and surface vessel attacks.
In light of these drills, there will be restrictions on navigation and underwater activities in the area. All small craft and watercraft are prohibited from navigating, and any underwater work and diving operations are prohibited during the drills. These measures are intended to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the drills.
The announcement was made by the press service of the city administration in Krasnodar. The drills will take place at the Military Harbor of the Novorossiysk Sea Port, and will include practical actions to repel attacks by unmanned boats and UAVs. The drills will also involve live-fire exercises from artillery installations on the piers of the Military Harbor.
These drills align with Russia’s adaptation to modern asymmetric threats, with exercises incorporating defensive drills against Ukrainian UAV and sea drone tactics and experimentation with offensive use of unmanned systems for potential future conflicts, likely including NATO scenarios.
