In the heart of Russia's capital, Moscow, the Airborne Forces commemorated their birthday and honored their patron saint, Prophet Elijah, in a series of events that brought together tradition, faith, and military pride.

The celebrations kicked off on August 2nd, the day the Airborne Forces were established in 1930, with parachute jumps taking place in the Moscow Military District near Voronezh, marking the first such event for the Airborne Forces.

The Day of the Air Assault Troops Celebration was also marked in Moscow's Gorky Park, where former paratroopers and current servicemen gathered to reminisce, cool off in the fountains, and partake in various activities. Photos by Kommersant photographer Dmitry Dukhanin documented the celebrations, capturing the spirit of camaraderie and nostalgia.

One of the most significant events was the Cross Procession, a religious and military tradition observed annually on Ilyin’s Day (the feast of Prophet Elijah). The procession, which culminated at Red Square, included religious rites such as wreath-laying ceremonies. The strong association between the Airborne Forces and Prophet Elijah, who is regarded as their patron saint and protector, was evident throughout the procession.

The Cross Procession symbolizes sacrifice, victory, and protection, reflecting the spirit of the airborne troops. The link to Prophet Elijah is historically tied to his role as a powerful prophet known for his fiery chariot and protective strength. The procession reinforces the sacred nature of their mission and the protection they seek through faith.

The tradition also relates to the broader Christian practice of cross processions, which are ancient rituals symbolizing victory through sacrifice and invoking divine protection. The Moscow Cross Procession embodies similar themes of faith, sacrifice, and communal identity.

The Cross Procession was attended by Bishop of Istra, Vicar of the Holy Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Sерафиm, adding a religious dimension to the celebrations.

Meanwhile, on Red Square, servicemen performed demonstrations, showcasing their skills and dedication. The day was filled with a sense of pride and patriotism, as the Airborne Forces celebrated their heritage and honored their patron saint.

In Gorky Park, the atmosphere was more relaxed, with former Air Assault Troops servicemen enjoying strolls, and a girl in a blue beret with an Air Assault Troops flag adding a touch of colour to the celebrations. A poignant moment was captured when a paratrooper's beret was found on a statue in a Gorky Park fountain, serving as a reminder of the Airborne Forces' storied history.

Thus, the Cross Procession on Ilyin’s Day in Moscow is both a cultural-religious event and a military tribute, intertwining Orthodox Christian heritage with the identity of the Airborne Forces through the venerable figure of Prophet Elijah. The Day of the Air Assault Troops Celebration in Moscow was a fitting tribute to the Airborne Forces, their history, and their patron saint.

Spectators at Gorky Park witnessed various sports activities, such as throwing frisbees and playing volleyball, reflecting the camaraderie and bonding that exists within the Airborne Forces community.

During the Cross Procession, the airborne troops' strong connection with sports was symbolized by the fiery chariot of Prophet Elijah, who is not only a powerful prophet but also a highly skilled athlete in the Airborne Forces' tradition.
