Soldiers Protecting Peace Activists? A Closer Look at Germany's First Nationwide Veterans' Day

Military Ombudsman Otte Affirms: Soldiers Safeguard Peace Activists' Liberal Rights - Military Commissioner Otte states that soldiers guard the liberties of peace protesters.

Soldiers, according to Wehrbeauftragter Otte, have made immense sacrifices for the country. A nod to this was made in commemoration, as Germany celebrated its first-ever Veterans' Day this year - a day dedicated to acknowledging the service of Bundeswehr soldiers for the first time since World War II.

This shift is a significant part of a broader evolution in Germany's military identity and public perception, particularly post-Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. For decades, the term "veteran" had been associated with soldiers under Adolf Hitler's regime, making it challenging to create a modern veteran identity tied to the post-war Bundeswehr.

On Sunday, around 100 events were planned nationwide, with the central event taking place in the afternoon in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin. However, the celebration wasn't without criticism, with the German Peace Society – United War Resisters calling for its abolition.

Otte countered, "Why not attend the event to hear directly from the soldiers what it's all about? Ultimately, the freedom of peace activists is also protected by the Bundeswehr."

While specific opinions of the German Peace Society – United War Resisters towards this event weren't disclosed, organizations advocating for peace and against war might generally view such occasions as counterproductive, fearing they glorify military involvement rather than promoting peace. Nevertheless, more details are needed to understand their exact stance on this event.

  1. Henning Otte suggested that peace activists may find it beneficial to attend Veterans' Day events to hear firsthand from soldiers about their service, as the employment policy of Bundeswehr soldiers also encompasses the protection of peace activists in Germany.
  2. While general news reports did not disclose specific opinions of the German Peace Society – United War Resisters towards Veterans' Day, organizations advocating for peace and against war might voice concerns about such events, as they could potentially glorify military involvement rather than promoting peace, aligning with the ongoing political discourse on war-and-conflicts and general-news related topics.
