Military Chief Promises Swift Response Following Boko Haram Attacks That Claim Over 40 Lives in Borno Region
The northeastern Nigerian state of Borno has been rocked by a string of Boko Haram attacks, resulting in over 40 casualties and numerous injuries. This wave of violence erupted across various regions, including Kalabalge, Damboa, and Kwaple, during less than a 24-hour window.
Monday's afternoon saw the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED) on the Kala-Balge road, targeting a group of 26 travelers. The tragic explosion claimed the lives of 26 individuals, including 16 men, four women, and six children.
Following the devastating explosion, the injured were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. Spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident, stating, "The tragic incident led to the death of 26 persons, which includes 16 males, four females, and six children."
Later that same day, around 7 pm, Boko Haram insurgents launched a brutal attack on a funeral gathering in Kwaple, a village near Chibok. The terrorists arrived on motorcycles and inflicted a coordinated assault that lasted about an hour. Despite the violence, security forces did not intervene during the attack.
Chairman of the Chibok Local Government Area, Modu Mustapha, confirmed the gruesome deaths, stating, "The terrorists attacked during a funeral, a lot of people were killed." A local source revealed that the attackers burnt a church and several houses, and also kidnapped several people, causing shock within the community.
These latest attacks are occurring amidst mounting concerns over the growing insecurity in the state. Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, previously warned that the security situation had worsened and that terrorist activities were becoming more frequent and brazen.
He urged the federal government to intensify efforts in combating the insurgency, calling for additional resources and technological support to strengthen military operations. Governor Zulum's senior technical assistant, Abdulrahman Bundi, reinforced the governor's concerns, affirming that the state is working closely with federal agencies to address the growing threat.
Army Pledges Enhanced Military Capacity
Amidst the ongoing chaos, Army Chief Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede reasserted the army's dedication to strengthening troops' capacity to combat insurgency. Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Combat Arms Training Week in Bauchi, Oluyede emphasized that the Nigerian Army is committed to improving operational effectiveness to better tackle the insurgency.
He stated that this would be achieved by incorporating necessary capabilities into training schedules and fostering adaptability to dynamic situations. The success of these efforts, Oluyede noted, hinges on timely logistics and prioritizing troop welfare.
Additionally, the Nigerian Army will work to improve strategic communications, bridge capability gaps, cultivate innovative leadership, and leverage assistance from the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, and other security agencies. Oluyede vowed the Army's commitment to mitigating security challenges across the country, stating that it would continue to adopt new methods consistent with international best practices to strengthen operational capacity and fulfill constitutional responsibilities.
