Military base Fort Stewart is locked down as authorities confirm presence of an 'active gunman'
The peaceful atmosphere at Fort Stewart, Georgia, was disrupted on August 6, 2025, when an active shooter incident occurred. The Fort Stewart Police Department confirmed the incident, and the US Army's Fort Stewart is currently under lockdown.
The shooting took place at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. According to the latest reports, a U.S. Army sergeant, Quornelius Radford, used his personal handgun and shot and injured five soldiers. The victims are reported to be in stable condition and expected to recover.
Radford was apprehended approximately 40 minutes after the shooting began. The lockdown on the main cantonment area has been lifted, but the 2nd ABCT complex remains locked down as the incident is under investigation. The motive behind the shooting is still unclear.
Six soldiers were hailed for their bravery in tackling and subduing the shooter, preventing further casualties. Some of these heroes received awards for their meritorious service during the incident.
Fort Stewart, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia, is home to the 3rd Infantry Division. Approximately 10,000 people, including soldiers, family members, and Army civilian employees, reside on the base.
The Fort Stewart Police Department's spokesperson, Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, has been providing regular updates on the situation. The Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield has also made a verified post about the incident.
