In a significant military development, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has announced plans for an operation to conquer Gaza City, with the operation estimated to take place from October 2025 through January 2026.

Key details of the operation include:

  • Evacuation Deadline: The full evacuation of civilians in Gaza City is set for October 7, 2025. After this, the IDF plans to surround the city and carry out the military takeover over approximately three months.
  • Operation Timeline: The main military operation to conquer Gaza City is expected to take place from October through December 2025. Following this, the IDF anticipates an additional two months to clear central Gaza camps and purge remaining armed groups, possibly extending the conflict further into early 2026.
  • Humanitarian Aid: During and after the operation, Israel intends to provide humanitarian aid outside the combat zones and establish humanitarian zones for displaced civilians.

The IDF aims to prevent harm to hostages during the operation and intends to conduct it in accordance with international law. Senior officials from the Southern Command and the Israeli Air Force are involved in the operation's planning.

Rotations cycles for reservist forces will be created during the operation. Once the operation begins, there will be no withdrawal from areas already captured in the Gaza Strip. Civilians will be evacuated before the IDF enters the heart of the city.

However, concerns have been raised about the feasibility of the operation, particularly the challenge of establishing "humanitarian zones" for about a million people within two months. Military correspondent Doron Kadush has reported these concerns.

IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has outlined principles for the operation, emphasising the importance of minimising civilian casualties and maintaining humanitarian conditions for evacuated civilians.

This timeline reflects IDF and Israeli government plans as of August 2025, acknowledging the complexity and potential for extension due to guerrilla warfare and urban combat challenges.
