Military ambush in Manipur results in the deaths of two Assam Rifles personnel and leaves five more injured. Former Chief Minister expresses reaction to the incident.

In a shocking incident that took place today, a vehicle carrying personnel from the 33 Assam Rifles was ambushed in Manipur's Bishnupur district. The attack, which occurred on a busy road, has left at least two personnel dead and five others injured.

The assailants, who are yet to be identified, escaped in a white van following the attack. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) is believed to be behind the ambush, as Manipur has been volatile following the outbreak of ethnic and political violence on 3 May 2023.

The militant groups in Manipur are opposing the Manipur Merger Agreement of 1949, which they assert was conducted under duress. This incident marks the first major assault on central security forces in Manipur since last year.

The attack occurred at around 5:50 pm, as the troops were moving from their Patsoi Company Operating Base to Nambol Company Operating Base. The injured personnel have been evacuated to RIMS and are currently stable.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Sing has expressed his condolences for the loss and injuries, and called for the perpetrators to face the harshest punishment. Security measures have been heightened in anticipation of further unrest ahead of the bandh, which is scheduled to take place just two days after the ambush. The troops showed restraint during the retaliation to avoid civilian casualties.

This incident unfortunately follows another ambush in the Jiribam district, where a CRPF jawan was killed and three others were injured in an ambush by suspected militants. Manipur has been on edge in recent months, and this latest attack serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing tension in the region.

Our thoughts go out to the families of the fallen personnel and those who are currently receiving medical treatment in RIMS, Imphal. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
