Military action initiated in Gaza by Israel; Netanyahu continues to push ahead with plans

The tension in the Gaza Strip continues to escalate, with the Israeli military preparing for a significant operation to capture Gaza City. The offensive was triggered by a major attack launched by the radical Islamic group Hamas on Israeli soldiers in October 2023, marking the beginning of the current war.

According to Israeli Channel 12, the primary aim of the attack was to capture Israeli soldiers as hostages. Regrettably, at least ten Hamas fighters were killed in the attack, and an Israeli soldier was seriously wounded, with two others sustaining light injuries.

In response, the Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has mobilised around 60,000 additional reservists for the capture of Gaza City. The Israeli military intends to warn civilians and facilitate their evacuation to refugee camps in the center of the sealed Gaza Strip by early October, in an effort to keep the risk to people as low as possible.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the capture of Gaza City to be accelerated, and the Israeli security cabinet approved a plan to capture Gaza at the beginning of August. The offensive may exacerbate the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in the sealed Gaza Strip, where around two million Palestinians live.

Notably, nearly two years later, Hamas still holds about 50 hostages in the Palestinian territory. Only about 20 of these hostages are estimated to be still alive by the Israeli army.

The United States has provided military support to Israel in the current Gaza operation, while other countries like Germany are involved in humanitarian aid rather than direct military support. The reserve duty of around 20,000 more soldiers will be extended, according to Katz's office.

As the Israeli troops occupy the outskirts of Gaza City, the Israeli military has begun preparatory measures for the capture of Gaza City. Media reports suggest that the residents of Gaza City may be evacuated to refugee camps in the center of the sealed Gaza Strip by early October.

The ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip continues to be a source of concern for both Israelis and Palestinians, and the international community is closely monitoring the situation. The capture of Gaza City is imminent, according to the Israeli military, and the outcome of this operation will undoubtedly have significant implications for the future of the region.
