Military action initiated by Israel in Gaza City, following the mobilization of approximately 60,000 reservists
The Middle East is witnessing significant developments as Israel prepares for an offensive in Gaza City, which is home to several Palestinian Bedouin communities. According to several Israeli media outlets, the operation is expected to last until early 2026.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has approved the plan for the offensive, which involves the displacement of over a million people, as per NGOs. The Israeli military has already gained control over the outskirts of Gaza City. The offensive is being expanded with troops being deployed in Jabalia and the neighborhood of Zeitoun.
In a related development, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions against four members of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The sanctions target Kimberly Prost of Canada, Nicolas Guillou of France, Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji, and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal. The sanctions include blocking any assets the individuals may have in the US and prohibiting transactions between those targeted and US citizens.
The ICC has condemned Washington's announcement, describing it as a "brazen attack on the independence" of the ICC. The court has vowed to continue fulfilling its mandates "in strict compliance with its legal framework, regardless of any pressure or threat".
Meanwhile, Israel has approved the controversial plan to expand settlements near East Jerusalem in the area known as "E1". The decision allows for the construction of 3,410 homes and the construction of a new road in E1, which is expected to separate Palestinian and Israeli traffic.
The move is considered illegal under international law, and it has sparked criticism from the international community. The construction of the military control point for entering East Jerusalem (Palestinian part of the city, unilaterally annexed by Israel in 1980 and claimed by the Palestinians as the capital of their future state) will be moved 14 kilometers to the east.
Since Benjamin Netanyahu came to power in 2022, the Israeli government has approved a record number of new settlements and land confiscations. Approximately 20,000 previously mobilized reservists will receive notifications to extend their service orders.
As the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve, it is crucial to stay informed and understand the complexities of the ongoing conflicts and political decisions.
