Military action in Gaza given the green light by Israeli forces, with Hamas accusing them of escalating hostilities
Israel is poised to launch a significant military operation in Gaza City, the largest city in the Gaza Strip. The offensive, which is part of an IDF's operational plan, comes after 22 months of conflict and ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage release involving Hamas, Egypt, and Qatar.
The Israeli military has approved a framework for the new offensive, with preparations underway to begin the operation within days. This decision follows the approval of Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who has ordered the call-up of 60,000 reservists and the extension of active duty for 20,000 others. Final approval from the IDF chief of staff is expected soon.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accelerated the timeline for the occupation of Gaza City, signalling a heightened level of military efforts in one of the most densely populated parts of the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu has emphasised conditions for ending the war, including disarmament of Hamas, hostage returns, dismantling Hamas rule, and Israeli security control over Gaza.
The offensive is being carried out amid dire humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian territory. Thousands of people have taken refuge in Gaza City after fleeing previous offensives. Ismail Al-Thawabta, director general of the Hamas government media office in Gaza, has condemned the offensive, describing it as "aggressive" Israeli ground incursions in Gaza City. He further stated that the Israelis are pursuing a scorched-earth policy and the complete destruction of civilian property.
The army released a statement confirming the approval of the offensive's main framework. The offensive in Gaza City is ongoing, marking the most significant escalation in months with significant military, political, and humanitarian implications. The operation is expected to have far-reaching consequences for the future of the Gaza Strip and the ongoing conflict.
