In a surprise move, Georg Milbradt, former Minister-President of Saxony, has lost his role as the Federal Government's special envoy for Ukraine. This change came about as the new federal government decided not to renew his mandate in its initial meeting. According to the "Sächsische Zeitung," the decision to reduce the number of government envoys, plenipotentiaries, and coordinators by 25 was made in this meeting. Milbradt, aged 80, was taken aback by this news on Monday evening.
Appointed by the previous federal government in 2017, Milbradt was tasked with advancing the restructuring and decentralization of administration. He served as Minister-President from 2002 to 2008, and as Finance Minister of Saxony for more than a decade before that. He is highly respected in Ukraine for his expertise.
As of now, the role of special envoy for Ukraine—previously held by Milbradt—is vacant under the new federal government. There's been no official announcement regarding a successor to take up this envoy role.
