Exit from 'Tatort': Axel Milberg's Post-Departure Plans Revealed - Milberg, in post-"Tatort", lays out his covert scheme

The final curtain call for "Borowski and the Gorgon's Head," marked Axel Milberg's (68) departure from "Tatort" on March 16. Yet, like the Greek legend, a new phase in his life is about to unfold. The distinguished actor is embarking on a fresh set of challenges, leaving behind the familiarity of Kieler detective Klaus Borowski.

In an interview with "Hörzu," Milberg divulged his excitement for those intriguing roles waiting in the wings. Heieriarch, "21 years is a substantial chunk of a person's life. Now, engrossing opportunities knock on my door." Among these upcoming opportunities, some intrigue lies abroad.

Historical Escapades with Disney+

News of his "Tatort" exit dating back to spring 2023, Milberg halted no time turning the page - diving headfirst into his next project mere days after the final Borowski filming day in February 2024. "Immediately after, I headed to Budapest: We shot a series revolving around the Congress of Vienna for Disney+," Milberg disclosed. "Streaming service giants require these large-scale productions, and they are challenging to execute during the 'Tatort' era." In the six-part series titled "Vienna Game," he embodies Friedrich I, King of Württemberg [5].

He underscored the need for time to invest in these substantial undertakings, expressing during an interview with NDR, "New beginnings are essential to me." This sentiment persists in his recent experiences, such as filming a suspenseful thriller deep within the Amazon rainforest [1]. To excel in every role, his formula remains steadfast: "Relinquish control to the story, and allow it to absorb me into a universe unknown."

But crime drama seems to hold little allure for him anymore. He extended his disillusionment to "Hörzu," "Perhaps one could argue that there's simply too much of it. Murder at the port, in the north, on islands, Halligen, in the mountains, in Amsterdam, Marseille, Trieste, Venice... Can't the evening news offer enough?" He ponders the need for additional "blood and gore," expressing dismay at the proliferation of violence on-screen [3]. He anticipates more uplifting or socially relevant stories, "Why not about unity? Or addressing antisemitism, radicalism threatening the heart of democracy?"

A Villainous Comeback in "Tatort"?

Yet, a return to "Tatort" as a guest star remains possible. He mused to "Hörzu," "Why not? If the script and role are stellar, I'd consider it. Perhaps even in Kiel, where I played Klaus Borowski for many years - as a criminal." However, a reprise in his iconic role appears unlikely. According to "Bild," Axel Milberg has no interest in a spin-off, declaring, "It was discussed whether one could do it much like with Schimanski, with a series not labeled 'Tatort.' But no. The conclusion is definitive. Finished for Klaus!" The actor seems to have no plans to revive his Borowski series [3].

The prophetic close of Borowski's final workday, culminating in detention, was apt for him. "It was at the finale just as I wished, and that was fitting for the character," shared Milberg. He acknowledges that he may no longer possess the capacity for "Tatort" now, relishing the chance to "finally spend more time with my family" [4]. Milberg has been married to his wife Judith (born 1962) since 2004, and together they have a son, August (21) [4]. Additionally, he has another son from his previous union, while Judith brought two children into their union [4].
