Luka Modrić Joins AC Milan on One-Year Deal

Luka Modrić, the renowned Croatian midfielder, has signed a one-year contract with AC Milan, with an option for an additional year, extending his tenure until June 30, 2027. This move comes after a highly successful 13-year stint with Real Madrid, where he accumulated an impressive 28 major trophies.

The deal was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano and Milan's coach Massimiliano Allegri. Modrić is set to join Milan after the 2025 Club World Cup, commencing pre-season training in early August 2025. The transfer is a free one, as Modrić's contract with Real Madrid has expired.

In his new role, Modrić is set to take a significant pay cut compared to his salary at Madrid. He earned around €10 million per year at the Spanish club, but at Milan, he has agreed to a reduction to approximately €2.5 million per year. This decision was motivated by his desire for a new European football challenge and the ambition to continue competing internationally for Croatia.

Reports suggest that there were no serious competition offers from other clubs. The agreement has been reached exclusively with AC Milan.

Modrić is described as a key figure in Milan's rebuilding project following their modest eighth-place finish in Serie A last season. He will wear the number 14 shirt and has expressed a strong ambition to help Milan aim for top honors rather than settle for average performance.

As Modrić prepares to leave Real Madrid, he has left behind a remarkable legacy. In the current season, he made nine assists for the club and scored four goals in 55 matches. He is also the record holder for the most games played in the history of the Croatian national team.

The Club World Cup, which starts on June 18 with Real's first match against Al-Hilal, will mark Modrić's final appearances for the Spanish club. He will also face Mexican team Pachuca on June 22 and RB Salzburg on June 26 in the tournament.

Modrić has had a stellar career, winning the Champions League six times, the Club World Cup five times, the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Super Cup five times each, the Spanish League four times, the Spanish Cup twice, and the Intercontinental Cup while at Real. He also won the bronze medal at the 2022 World Cup with the Croatian national team.

Modrić made his debut for the Croatian national team in March 2006 and has since played 186 matches, scoring 27 goals and making 29 assists. He was named the best footballer of the year by FIFA and UEFA in 2018, a year in which he also received the Golden Ball award.

Modrić announced his departure from Real on May 22, and he joined the club from Tottenham in the summer of 2012. The Transfermarkt portal values Modrić at €5 million.

With Modrić's arrival, AC Milan is poised to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season, aiming for a more successful campaign than their eighth-place finish in Serie A last year.

Sports legend Luka Modrić, following his illustrious 13-year career with Real Madrid, has decided to participate in European-leagues, specifically Laliga, by joining AC Milan. Despite having played football for Croatia's national team for more than a decade, Modrić remains determined to face new challenges and compete internationally.
