Embracing Nature's Renewal: Studio Swine & COS's "New Spring"
Studio Swine and fashion brand COS collaborated to create an unforgettable experience at Milano Design Week 2023: the "New Spring" installation. This multi-sensory piece takes visitors on a captivating journey filled with mist-filled bubbles that burst and vanish on touch.
Enter the dimly lit, abandoned cinema and slip on your provided hand gloves. Breathe in as you look up – a tree-like structure unfolds before your eyes, adorned with fragrant, misty blooms. These ephemeral blossoms burst upon touch, leaving behind a trace of vapor. Interact with the delicate bubbles descending from above; they yield to touch or a puff of breath, creating fleeting moments of magic.
Studio Swine, known for its material-driven and tech-focused art installations, aimed to create a democratic and accessible experience with "New Spring." The piece showcases a central tree structure surrounded by a darkened space, with dufting, Nebel-filled blossoms cascading in the air. These blossoms pop upon contact with skin but persist momentarily upon meeting structured fabric.
Led by founder Alexander Groves, Studio Swine's synergy of traditional craftsmanship, modern technology, and environmental concerns shone in the creation of "New Spring." The installation is crafted from Gerüstaluminium, with the mist-filled bubbles made of water, air, and steam, evaporating without leaving a trace.
COS, known for its minimalist and modern fashion, commissioned the installation, marking the sixth collaborative project with a designer or artist during Milan Design Week. Previous collaborations include Gary Card, Bonsoir Paris, Nendo, Snarkitecture, and Sou Fujimoto.
COS Creative Director Karin Gustafsson discovered Studio Swine's work through research and fell in love with their innovative approach. During an interview in their London studio, Gustafsson praised the duo's creativity and installation design, calling it "wow"-inspiring.
Visitors can experience "New Spring" at Milan Design Week until the end of the event. Take part in this captivating exploration of transformation and interaction that celebrates the intersection of art, design, and technology during this remarkable event.
