Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics: A Countdown to Epic Excitement

The countdown to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics has begun, with the games set to commence on February 6th. The Olympic opening ceremony will take place at the iconic San Siro stadium, while the sliding events will be held in the picturesque town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.

The construction of the Cortina track was completed on schedule, and it has surpassed expectations, according to reports. The official cost of building the track was 120 million euros ($142 million). The sliding events, including bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton, are set to be a major highlight of the games.

The decision to build the track in Cortina d'Ampezzo was initially met with concern by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, the person who advocated for the sledding events to take place in the town was ÖOC President Horst Nussbaumer.

The Olympic village in Milan is structurally ready, and approximately 800,000 out of 1.2 million tickets for the Olympics have been sold. Curling will start the Olympic action two days earlier than the opening ceremony.

The Russian Olympic Committee's athletes are expected to compete under a neutral flag, as they did at last year's summer Games in Paris. The IOC's executive board meeting will not discuss the participation of Israeli athletes as their Olympic committee is in compliance with the Olympic Charter.

Christophe Dubi, the Olympic Games' Executive Director, stated there is always a certain level of risk that needs to be addressed. The Olympic torch's journey around Italy may be vulnerable to protests, similar to those that stopped the final stage of the Vuelta a Espana cycling race. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators targeted the Vuelta a Espana due to the presence of the Israel Premier Tech team.

Kirsty Coventry, the first woman to head the IOC, will visit the Olympic village in Milan on Thursday. Coventry, a two-time Olympic swimming champion, is looking forward to the games and the opportunity to engage with athletes and officials.

The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics promises to be an unforgettable event, filled with excitement and sportsmanship. With the sliding centre in Cortina surpassing expectations and the Olympic village in Milan ready, the stage is set for a memorable games. Let the countdown continue!
