Mila Kunis discusses her preparations for the 'Black Swan' movie production
Fifteen years ago, Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman embarked on a challenging journey for the psychological horror film "Black Swan." Kunis, who starred as a professional ballerina, prepared for her role by engaging in extensive dance training while consuming very little food, primarily drinking broth.
Despite having danced only once before being cast, Kunis danced for about 12 hours daily during the preparation period, which was initially three months but extended to six months due to financing delays. This intense regimen took a toll on her body, as she sustained painful injuries during the filming, including bruised ribs from repeated lifts and a dislocated shoulder. To manage her injuries, Kunis sought treatment from an acupuncturist.
Portman, who played the lead in the film, played the role of Lily, the seductive rival of her character Nina. Portman was instrumental in convincing director Darren Aronofsky to cast Kunis in the role of Lily. In a casual conversation at a flea market, Portman exaggerated Kunis's ballet background to secure the role for her costar.
Both Kunis and Portman were happy about the extended preparation period, as it allowed them more time to refine their dance skills, albeit at the expense of significant physical strain. The extended prep period also affected Aronofsky, who was deeply invested in the film's production.
"Black Swan" marked a significant moment in both actresses' careers, with Kunis receiving an Academy Award nomination for her performance. Today, Kunis is 42 years old, and Portman is 44. Looking back, their intense preparation and commitment to the film are a testament to their dedication and the film's dark, intense depiction of ballet dancers' lives.
