The image shows a man standing in front of a crowd of people in a theater. He is wearing a green t-shirt and blue jeans, and is holding a microphone in his hand. Behind him, two women are sitting on the stairs, and there are red chairs in the background. On the right side of the image, there is a railing, and on the top of the roof, there are lights.

Mikhail Yefremov stages a controlled comeback under Mikhalkov's strict terms

Actor Mikhail Yefremov has returned to the stage after his release from prison in April 2025. His comeback began with a role in Nikita Mikhalkov's theatre troupe, marking a new chapter in his controversial career. The director had set strict conditions for this return—conditions Yefremov reportedly met in full. Yefremov joined Mikhalkov's Masterskaya 12 theatre company in autumn 2025. His first performance came on February 14, 2026, in the play Bez svideteley (Without Witnesses), sharing the stage with Anna Mikhalkova. The production premiered publicly in Moscow on March 25-26, 2026.

Before agreeing to the collaboration, Mikhalkov had closely monitored Yefremov's behaviour for years. He demanded three key terms: no media interviews, no film roles outside his projects, and no work with other directors. Yelena Bledans later confirmed that Yefremov had 'perfectly fulfilled' these requirements. Mikhalkov also spoke about prison's impact on the actor, calling it a 'destructive cauldron' but hinting it might sharpen his talent. Meanwhile, Yefremov has also taken a lead role in an undisclosed Kion series, set to premiere in 2026.

Yefremov's return to acting follows a structured path under Mikhalkov's guidance. His theatre debut and upcoming TV role signal a controlled re-entry into public life. The conditions imposed—and met—suggest a carefully managed career revival after his imprisonment.
