Article: Lower Decks' Multiverse Finale: An Inside Look at the Emotional Conclusion and Guest Stars

In an exclusive post-mortem interview with our platform, series creator and showrunner Mike McMahan delves into the epic conclusion of Star Trek: Lower Decks' fifth season. The finale saw the USS Cerritos saving not just their prime timeline, but every quantum reality, after an influx of energy overloaded a dimensional rift.

The crew braved numerous challenges throughout the season, from potential Orion war to furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, and time dilation missions. Speaking about the Cerritos and its unique crew, Lieutenant j.g. Beckett Mariner said in the series' finale, "We are a family. That's why I love it here."

McMahan discusses the approach to the multiversal finale and the decision to have Lily Sloane and her crew as the multiversal baddie. He revealed, "It was important to me to create a Star Trek take on it. Exploring different realities allows us to learn about ourselves, and this fitted the theme of Lower Decks perfectly."

For the multiverse arc, our platform welcomed back renowned Star Trek talent, including Brent Spiner, Alfre Woodard, and Andrew Robinson. McMahan reflected on the experience, saying, "It was a dream to work with such talented actors who were kind and eager to revisit their roles."

The multiversal storyline allowed McMahan to breathe fresh life into much-loved fandom darlings without altering the Prime Timeline. He handed Garashir a new twist by making Dr. Bashir a hologram akin to our beloved Voyager hologram doctor. Garak, too, returned as a surgeon, a role that befitted them comfortably, given their similarities in sewing things up – one of clothing and the other of injuries.

In "Fissure Quest," William Boimler and Beckett Mariner's friendship "transcended realities," according to series actress Tawny Newsome. This exploration of friendship has further reinforced the utopian vision of Star Trek as a beacon for community and hope.
