Chancellor Merz and Prime Minister Meloni Explore Services in Remote Locations for Migration Matters
Migration Integration Proposal by Merz and Meloni
In a historic visit to Rome, Germany's new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, hinted at teaming up with Italy to beef up European migration regulations. Merz also suggested investigating Italy's method of handling asylum applications in distant lands.
During a press conference with Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, Merz discussed the need for a firmer stance on irregular migration into the European Union. "We're gunning for a more decisive approach to tackling unauthorized migration into the EU," Merz stated. He further expressed, "The German government vows not to stand in the way of solving issues within the EU anymore."
Merz and Meloni agreed to take a closer look at collaborating with foreign countries to diminish the influx of illegal migrants into Europe. "We're committed to addressing the migration issue head-on, and working together with other countries can play a significant role in this," Merz added.
Political Tensions and Ukraine War
Tensions between Germany and Ukraine post Kyiv visit have not deterred Merz from bolstering Italy's role in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. "We're keen on enhancing Italy's influence in the Ukraine war," Merz declared at the joint press conference.
Legal Hurdles on the Albania Scheme
Italy has partnered with EU aspirant Albania to station migrants apprehended in the Mediterranean at holding centers in Albania. These centers serve as temporary accommodations for migrants while their asylum applications are considered. However, this approach has raised eyebrows and faced legal challenges.
Despite the legal obstacles, Merz acknowledged Albania as an option for outsourcing asylum procedures. "We're aware of the potential issues, including legal complications, related to Italy's cooperation with Albania," Merz admitted. He, however, reiterated, "This method could still prove useful in minimizing the migration issue, though it won't eradicate it entirely."
Merz and Meloni underscored the deep-rooted connections between their countries. "Germany and Italy share a long-lasting friendship that spans through decades," Merz emphasized.
