Migrant repatriated to France following the agreement signed between France and Britain this summer.
The UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has described the first deportation of a migrant as a "significant first step in securing" the UK's borders. This action marks the beginning of the implementation of the migration agreement signed between the UK and France in July 2022.
The agreement allows for the return of migrants who arrived in the UK on small boats to France. The first deportation took place on September 18, when a man who entered the UK in August was sent back to France on a commercial flight. Another Eritrean migrant, who arrived in the UK at the beginning of August and filed an appeal, is expected to be deported to France on Friday morning.
In exchange for the return of migrants, the agreement also permits the transfer of migrants from France to the UK. The first migrants allowed to come to the UK from France are expected to arrive "in the coming days".
The UK government has planned more flights to transport migrants to France for this week and next, according to the Home Office. This is part of the government's efforts to enforce the migration agreement and prevent the misuse of modern slavery legislation to prevent deportations.
However, the UK government suffered a setback when the High Court in London temporarily blocked the planned deportation of an Eritrean migrant. In response, the government has decided to appeal the court's decision and announced a review of modern slavery legislation.
The British government official responsible for implementing the migration agreement between the United Kingdom and France is the Home Secretary. The Home Office has stated that they aim to ensure the agreement is implemented effectively and humanely, while maintaining the UK's commitment to protecting its borders.
