Migrant Death Toll Reaches 26 in Two Ships Sinking Near Italy

In the Central Mediterranean, five vessels are currently searching for survivors after a tragic incident that occurred between North Africa and Italy. The incident, which is being described as the world's most dangerous sea crossing for migrants by the United Nations, has left at least 370 people dead or missing as of August 9, 2025.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offered her condolences to the victims and vowed to step up efforts against migrant traffickers. Meloni stated that preventing irregular departures and managing migration flows is the key to tackling the issue of trafficking.

According to reports, at least 26 victims have been confirmed, with the toll being provisional and being updated. Among the first to be transported to the Lampedusa mortuary were the bodies of a newborn, three children, two men, and two women. The UNHCR refugee agency reported that 675 migrant deaths have occurred on the central Mediterranean route so far this year.

The sinkings occurred on two boats that reportedly left Tripoli, Libya, earlier in the day. Flavio Di Giacomo, spokesman for the UN's migration agency, stated that around 95 people had been on the two boats. As of Wednesday, 38,263 migrants have arrived on Italy's shores this year, a figure significantly less than in 2023 when almost 100,000 people had arrived by mid-August.

One of the boats started taking on water, causing people to climb onto the other boat, which then capsized. Currently, 60 people have been rescued and disembarked in Lampedusa. One of the vessels belongs to the EU's Frontex border agency.

Meloni's government has cut deals with North African countries to provide funding and training in exchange for help in stemming departures. The Italian coastguard reported the rescue of 60 people after the sinkings. The survivors included 56 men and four women, according to Italy's Red Cross.

While the Central Mediterranean specifically reports 370 deaths, the overall Mediterranean region has seen a larger number of fatalities. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at least 1,011 people have died on various Mediterranean routes by mid-August 2025.

The Italian government and international agencies continue their search efforts and call for increased cooperation to address the ongoing issue of migrant trafficking and the loss of life in the Mediterranean.
