In the heart of the Mediterranean, a tragic event unfolded off the coast of Lampedusa, Italy, on August 13. According to the UNHCR, at least 27 lives were lost in the shipwreck, with 95 people attempting the perilous journey from Libya on two overcrowded boats [1].

The Italian Coast Guard and the European agency for border guards were swiftly involved in the search for survivors, joined by a helicopter and an airplane [2]. Regrettably, the search has yielded only two survivors, who were evacuated by helicopter to Sicily for treatment [3].

The migrant reception center in Lampedusa currently houses 240 migrants, as per its director Imad Dalil [4]. Among the survivors, most are Somali, with a few Egyptians. The 58 survivors, including 21 minors, spent a quiet night in the center [5].

Upon arrival, migrants are first taken to these reception centers for temporary processing. Basic needs such as accommodation and medical care are provided, including health assessments for survivors of shipwrecks or dangerous journeys [6]. After initial reception and medical care, migrants undergo further immigration procedures. This includes registration, identification, and information about asylum rights, coordinated with Italian authorities and international agencies [2].

Italian laws and government policies also play a significant role in managing migration flows. These regulations aim to control migration flow and prevent irregular entries, with some emphasis on discouraging departures from North African coasts [2].

In response to these events, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed her government's commitment to "fight against these unscrupulous traffickers" and "prevent irregular departures, manage migratory flows" [7]. The Italian government has also signed agreements with North African countries to provide funding and training in exchange for help in preventing boat departures to Italy [8].

As the search for survivors continues until Sunday morning, the Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, commented on the latest shipwreck as "the sixth tragedy in the Central Mediterranean today, 14 nautical miles from Lampedusa" [9].

Since the beginning of the year, 675 people have perished in the central Mediterranean [10]. This year, 38,263 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea, as reported by the Italian Ministry of the Interior [11]. The European agency for border guards is also involved in these efforts to ensure the safety of those attempting the dangerous journey.
