Catching Waves: Could Margot Robbie Be the New Anna Nicole Smith in Biopic?

- Might Margot Robbie portray Anna Nicole Smith in an upcoming film?

A buzzworthy film project about the life of the infamous blonde bombshell, Anna Nicole Smith (1967-2007), has been stirring up some gossip recently. At the heart of the chatter is Academy Award winner Margot Robbie (34), who may soon slip into the iconic role.

According to reports from "The Sun", close pals of Smith — luxury fashion designer Pol' Atteu and television producer Patrik Simpson — are intending to create a biopic. Their top contender for the lead role? None other than Margot Robbie. "We've got our eye on Margot, and I reckon she's our Anna Nicole," Simpson allegedly said to the media.

Dream Team, No Guarantees

"Following her performance in the Barbie film, I enjoyed the screening, and I said, 'That's our Anna,'" Simpson continued. According to insiders, it was Robbie's knack for embodying Barbie that clinched the deal. As Atteu once joked, Smith was like the real-life Barbie, making Robbie the perfect fit, they thought. They even claimed to have felt a spark when they previously met the actress at a red-carpet event. The script for the biopic is said to be finished already.

However, a subsequent article by the UK's "DailyMail" challenges these claims, stating that Robbie is not, in fact, under consideration for the role. They asserted they had learned "there's no truth to the casting," but failed to provide solid sources for their claim.

A Crowded Market for Anna Nicole Smith Biographies

The plans of Simpson and Atteu's team may face obstacles as there are already several films focusing on Anna Nicole Smith's life. It was announced in December 2023 that Sylvia Hoeks (41), known for "Blade Runner 2049," will star as Smith in "Hurricana," which is supposedly already in post-production. Smith's story has also been dramatized in "The Anna Nicole Smith Story" (2007) and the Lifetime TV movie "The Anna Nicole Story" (2013).

Smith's story is riddled with controversy: she rose to fame as a model before marrying octogenarian oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall (89) in 1994, who died the following year. A drawn-out legal battle over his estate ensued. Her reality show, "The Anna Nicole Show," which ran from 2002 to 2004, brought her to a broader audience. Tragedy struck in 2006 when her son Daniel succumbed to an overdose at 20, just three days after the birth of her daughter Dannielynn. Smith herself passed away five months later due to an accidental overdose of medication.

Despite the rumors from "The Sun," Margot Robbie is not under consideration for the biopic role of Anna Nicole Smith, as reported by the UK's "DailyMail."Though Margot Robbie's performance in the Barbie film and her resemblance to a Barbie doll initially made her a viable candidate for the role, she might face competition from other actresses who have also been cast to portray Anna Nicole Smith in biographies, such as Sylvia Hoeks in the film "Hurricana."If cast in the biopic, Margot Robbie could showcase her talent for embodying strong, stylish, and controversial characters like Smith, a luxury fashion designer, television personality, and model, who gained fame through a series of high-profile relationships and legal battles.
