Midfielder Hiroki Akiyama strengthens Lilies' squad
Hiroki Akiyama, a reliable central and defensive midfielder, has joined German club SV Darmstadt 98 on loan from Japanese side Albirex Niigata. The Japanese international arrived at Darmstadt's training camp in Bad Woerishofen, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in his career.
Akiyama began his professional journey with Albirex Niigata in 2019 and made a significant impact in Japan's top league. In the 2023 season, he played 24 matches, contributing to the team with his exceptional ball security, control, and precise passing. Although he didn't find the back of the net, he made a mark in other midfield aspects, such as defensive actions, aerial duels, and chance creation.
Before his transfer to Darmstadt, Akiyama was a key player for Albirex Niigata, earning the captain's armband in 18 games last season. His impressive performances did not go unnoticed, as Darmstadt secured the option to buy him, although no official purchase has been announced yet.
Paul Fernie, Darmstadt's sporting director, praised Akiyama, calling him an "absolute strategist" with exceptional skills. Fernie also confirmed that Akiyama will wear the number 16 jersey for Darmstadt.
Darmstadt's training camp in Bad Woerishofen has been successful, with the team winning two tests. The club recently presented its new away jersey to the public, featuring a lot of white and some blue.
Marcel Schuhen has been named the new team captain of Darmstadt, but Fernie did not mention any new captain for the team in his description of Akiyama.
In addition to Akiyama, Darmstadt has also enjoyed victories during their training camp, with a 9-0 win against Weiler. The club is looking forward to the upcoming season with renewed optimism, bolstered by the addition of the talented midfielder.
Hiroki Akiyama, the new signing at SV Darmstadt 98, is eager to make an impact in European football, having showcased his skills in Japan's top league and Asian sports. With his exceptional ball control, precision passing, and strong defensive actions, Akiyama aims to contribute significantly to Darmstadt's performances in European-leagues.
