Former F1 racer Robert Kubica shines, triumphing in a Ferrari at Le Mans, while Mick Schumacher struggles to catch up, ultimately missing out on the top ten in the iconic race.
40-year-old Kubica, who has had a remarkable comeback from a near-fatal rally accident in 2011, clinched his first victory in 24 Hours of Le Mans. Alongside Ye Yifei and Philip Hanson, Kubica triumphed in the Hypercar class, eliciting jubilation from over 300,000 spectators.
"It's hard to put into words," Kubica expressed, recalling his second-place finish in a different category at Le Mans four years prior. "Le Mans is something extraordinary. Winning in the Hypercar class makes the victory all the sweeter," he shared with Nitro Channel.
Battling adversity throughout his career, Kubica lifted his teammates on the start-finish straight, and together they closed in on victory, driving through a sea of people to the winner's podium.
Meanwhile, Mick Schumacher and the Alpine team found themselves out of the race for the top positions. After a teammate's spin, Schumacher fought to advance, finishing in 11th place. German Pascal Wehrlein brought a similar Porsche home in 9th position.
As the Ferrari team hoisted their trophies following the close of the 93rd edition of the classic, memories of Kubica's past contentions against potentially biased factory Ferraris had faded.
Once a Promise of Greatness
In 2011, Kubica endured severe injuries in a rally accident in Italy, mangling his right leg, arm, and tendons in his right hand. Despite these setbacks, he returned to F1, competing for Williams and Alfa Romeo. Counting one victory, he made 99 starts before stepping away. A heavy crash in Canada in 2007 remains a vivid memory, but Kubica overcame it to seize victory at Le Mans.
