Michigan Football's starting quarterback will be officially announced by Sherrone Moore, according to his recent statement, which reveals the schedule for this decision.

Michigan's college football team is gearing up for the 2025 season with Bryce Underwood, a highly-touted five-star recruit, as the anticipated starting quarterback. Although head coach Sherrone Moore has not officially named the starter as of mid-August 2025, all signs point to Underwood as the chosen one, with the announcement expected close to game week against New Mexico on August 30, 2025.

During fall camp, Coach Moore has kept the quarterback competition open but has praised Underwood’s talent, understanding of the offense, and leadership qualities, particularly under new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey. Underwood has reportedly added 15 pounds of muscle during the off-season to enhance his explosiveness, strength, and speed, indicating his physical readiness to lead the team.

Competitors for the starting QB role include transfer Mikey Keene, redshirt freshman Jadyn Davis, and veteran Jake Garcia, but Keene has dealt with an injury that hindered his offseason. Media and insider assessments describe Underwood as the "worst-kept secret" starter and the favorite to lead the Wolverine offense this season, with backups likely to be Davis, Keene, or Garcia.

Coach Moore plans to announce the decision officially shortly before the season opener, likely during game week, to maintain competitive preparedness across candidates. Michigan will face Oklahoma on Sept. 6, with Oklahoma beginning the year ranked No. 18 and Michigan debuting at No. 14. Underwood will get a warm-up game against New Mexico before facing Oklahoma.

Bryce Underwood enrolled early and is preparing for his second semester in the fall. He landed in Ann Arbor as one of the most-hyped prospects in program history, with a $10 million NIL deal. Coach Moore, who played quarterback at Oklahoma, will be hoping that Underwood can lead Michigan to a successful season and help the team bounce back from a one-dimensional passing game in 2024, where Michigan leaned heavily on their running back tandem of Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards.

In 2024, Michigan bounced back-and-forth between Davis Warren, Alex Orji, and Jack Tuttle in the quarterback position, throwing only 1,678 passing yards as a team on the year. With the addition of Fresno State transfer Mike Keene and former four-star prospect Jadyn Davis to the quarterback room, Michigan expects a significant quarterback upgrade in 2025.

Michigan is currently a 36-point favorite to beat New Mexico, suggesting that multiple quarterbacks may see the field in Week 1. However, with Underwood's impressive performance in camp and the consensus among experts, it seems likely that he will get the nod as the starting quarterback for Michigan in 2025.
