Michigan college student found dead after vanishing in -15°C Arctic freeze
A 19-year-old college student in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been found dead after disappearing in freezing temperatures. Lucas Mattson was reported missing on Friday night during an extreme cold snap, with temperatures plunging to -15°C (5°F). His body was discovered the following afternoon.
The Ann Arbor Police Department issued an endangered missing person alert for Mattson late on Friday. He was last seen around 1 a.m. walking alone near the 1700 block of Hill Street, dressed only in a T-shirt and jeans. Overnight searches failed to locate him as the region faced Arctic conditions, with lows between -10°C and -15°C (14°F to 5°F) from March 12–15.
Mattson's body was found around noon on Saturday in the 1900 block of Cambridge Road. Authorities have stated there are no visible signs of trauma, and foul play is not suspected. The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner's Office will now conduct an examination to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
The National Weather Service had issued extreme cold warnings for the area before the incident. The Arctic air mass brought dangerously low wind chills, raising concerns for anyone exposed to the elements for prolonged periods.
The investigation into Mattson's death will continue as officials await the medical examiner's findings. His disappearance and death occurred during one of the coldest periods in the region this year, with temperatures remaining well below freezing for several days.
