Michelin's New Map Unveils Switzerland's 56 Most Charming Villages
The Michelin Guide has launched its first map of Switzerland and Liechtenstein's most picturesque villages. The new release highlights 56 carefully selected locales, each known for their charm and heritage. Alongside scenic routes, the map also suggests cycling tours, lake cruises, and 54 Michelin-recommended restaurants nearby.
The project builds on an existing network of villages already recognised for their beauty and upkeep.
The 56 featured villages were previously acknowledged by Les Plus Beaux Villages de Suisse, an association founded in 2015. These communities—spread across 21 in western Switzerland, 23 in German-speaking regions, 7 in Italian-speaking areas, and 5 in Romansh zones—must meet strict criteria. Authenticity, historical character, and a commitment to international networking are all required. The first village to earn the title was Poschiavo in Graubünden.
The Michelin map goes beyond just listing villages. It includes themed routes for cyclists, lake excursions, and stops at Michelin-starred or recommended restaurants. Lakeside retreats, wine villages, mountain hamlets, and spiritual sites are all part of the collection, with some lesser-known destinations featured.
Michelin Editions, known for its travel guides, continues to produce themed maps for scenic journeys. Despite digital navigation, the company still sells around two million road maps each year. A significant share—68%—of buyers are working professionals who rely on them for travel planning.
The new map offers travellers a curated guide to Switzerland and Liechtenstein's hidden gems. With cycling paths, dining suggestions, and village highlights, it provides a structured way to explore the region. The collaboration with Les Plus Beaux Villages de Suisse ensures that only the most well-preserved and visually striking locations are included.
