Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP) to Make Debut in Neuburg's City Council

The Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP) is set to make its mark in Neuburg's local politics, announcing its intention to run a city council list and a mayoral candidate in the upcoming election. This move marks the ÖDP's first foray into Neuburg's local politics.

Holger Geißel, district chairman of the ÖDP, made the announcement on Tuesday. Michael Wittmair, previously from the Left party and briefly independent, will join the ÖDP and will be the party's mayoral candidate. Wittmair plans to continue his political activities under the ÖDP banner and run in the 2026 municipal election.

The ÖDP's focus will be on creating a livable, ecological, and social Neuburg. Thematic focuses include bike-friendly city, school in Heinrichsheim, information on PFAS, electromagnetic fields from cell towers, rejection of the second Danube bridge, youth work, and transport policy. The party's agenda is strongly oriented towards cautious technological development and safeguarding public health and privacy.

Criticisms associated with this focus often arise from local conflicts over infrastructure projects, such as opposition to the erection of new mobile network masts due to fears of property value decline and health risks. Wittmair's proposals in the city council often receive harsh criticism from other members. However, Wittmair feels systematically excluded from working groups, leading to content not being discussed in the appropriate forums.

To run their own city council list and mayoral candidate, the ÖDP needs 190 citizens eligible to vote with a residence in Neuburg. The official membership declaration will be signed by Wittmair on Thursday. The beginning and end of the registration period for supporters' signatures will be announced at a later date.

The ÖDP's city councilor will be a strong advocate for bridge opponents in the council. The establishment of the Neuburg-Rohrenfels local association is a first for the ÖDP. This new local association, which will include the neighboring municipality of Rohrenfels, will support the work of the new ÖDP city council and run in the upcoming election.

For detailed local election procedural specifics or current ÖDP candidate platforms for Neuburg, consulting Neuburg’s official electoral office or the ÖDP Neuburg branch directly would provide the most precise and up-to-date information.
