Michael Wimmer assumes lead coaching position at SSV Jahn
SSV Jahn Regensburg Appoints New Head Coach
The German football club, SSV Jahn Regensburg, has announced the appointment of 44-year-old Michael Wimmer as its new head coach. Wimmer, a native of Dingolfing, Niederbayern, will begin his tenure with the club in the 2025/26 season, signing a contract that extends until June 30, 2027.
Wimmer's recent stint was with Scottish Premier League side Motherwell FC. Sports Business Manager Achim Beierlorzer expressed approval of the new appointment, citing Wimmer's progressive football ideas, energy, and emphasis on team development as key factors in his selection.
The newly appointed coach shared his enthusiasm for the challenge, expressing alignment with SSV Jahn's expectations and values. Family reasons prompted Wimmer's decision to return to Germany after his time in Scotland. He promises to instill commitment, courage, intensity, and conviction in his teams at the Jahn Stadium in Regensburg.
Wimmer's coaching career began as an assistant coach at VfB Stuttgart in 2019, following which he took over as interim head coach in late 2022. In January 2023, he became head coach of Austria Wien, where he achieved a significant 7–0 victory over SV Spittal/Drau in the Austrian Cup. However, his tenure ended prematurely following a 4–0 home defeat against Wolfsberger AC in May 2024.
Wimmer is no stranger to coaching in Germany, having trained various youth teams for the 1. FC Nürnberg between 2010 and 2018, where he developed several promising talents. This marks a welcome return to German football for the experienced coach.
