Michael Che disputed Kanye West backstage during the 2018 'SNL' due to claims of West betraying the show's cast by allegedly profiting excessively.
In a limited release documentary titled 'In the Whose?', Kanye West's 2018 speech on Saturday Night Live, where he discussed Black comedians and controversial topics, and his subsequent backstage confrontation with Michael Che are prominently featured. Directed by Nico Ballestones, the documentary spans over six years of footage, totaling approximately 3,000 hours.
During his speech, Kanye West expressed his support for President Donald Trump and made comments about the role of Black comedians in discussing controversial topics. He said, 'You can't always have, every time you have a Black subject matter like Bill [Cosby] that you have to have a Black comedian talking about him.'
This remark led to a heated exchange with Michael Che backstage. Che confronted Kanye West, expressing his frustration towards the rapper for making a joke about a Black comedian making a joke about Bill Cosby, when in fact, it was Che who had made those jokes.
The conversation between the two was captured on camera, adding a dramatic element to the documentary. Kanye West clarified that he was not talking about Michael Che but was joking about another SNL comedian, Leslie Jones.
Despite the tension, Kanye West claimed to love Michael Che, stating, 'I love the 24-time Grammy winner, Michael Che.' However, Che was not amused by Kanye's comments and continued to express his disapproval.
Interestingly, Kanye West was told not to wear his Make America Great Again (MAGA) hat during his Saturday Night Live appearance, but he chose to do so, leading to backstage bullying from some members of the cast and crew.
The documentary, 'In the Whose?', is a must-watch for fans of Kanye West and those interested in the behind-the-scenes dynamics of Saturday Night Live. With its limited release of only 3,000 copies, it promises an intimate and exclusive look into the life and career of one of the most controversial figures in modern music.
